CLEAN UP IDEAS

Hi all, I'm new to the forum & I have searched previous topics however I thought it would be a great idea to re-open the floor.
My son loves his LEGO, yet as you all know LEGO has a tendency to get everywhere... and as what seems like a short attention span - when it comes to clean-up my son has no interest. I'm after any ideas you have for a) cleanup & organising your LEGO and clean-up etc.
I've searched for some ideas and I thought lets ask from the source. Any help greatly appreciated.

My parents have been trying to solve that problem for 10 years. I keep my LEGO in those "hardware organisers" that have a bunch of little plastic drawers. They are sorted into categories like "plants," "minifigs," or "2x2 bricks." I also have a big plastic bin for throwing LEGO into when I'm in a hurry. Then when I have some spare time I'll take a handful from the bin a sort it back into the drawers.

My son lays a double bed sheet across the floor then tips the LEGO out on it. When he gets bored and its time to put away you pick up all 4 corners and tip it back into the box.....
He does want it sorted properly - I use shoeboxes for that as they are easy to label and stack nicely being small enough for small hands top get out of a pile too.

I too am always searching for better ways to "clean-up" the LEGO piles. So far we have been getting by with plastic totes & colored bins. I even bought a LEGO brand box for xmas a few years ago that had tiers that could be removed and held diff sized pieces. But It still always seems that there are piles and pieces everywhere my sons play with them.

My four year-old hadn't played with his Thomas trains in ages, so I decided to convert his train table into a LEGO table. We took off the train tracks and covered the table with green LEGO building plates. I also sorted the blocks into different plastic containers which fit in the drawers underneath the table. Even if he doesn't put away all of the containers when he's finished, at least the Legos are all in one place now.

Try putting down a large cardboard sheet and put it on the floor. Then when you want to clear up just pick up the cardboard sheet and dump it in the LEGO bin.

Mine solution may be a little rough. However it works perfectly. ;-) I love my kids but sometime some good motivation is really needed. I was cleaning after my son for a while. Finally after he refused to clean his legos again I came with trash bucket and warned him how I would clean. He ignored - > I “cleaned”-> he cried a little-> he cleaned. Used it two or three time – no problems any more. About organization….. It depends on child and his/her preference. Leave on top only sets he plays with. Others go into bags and storage. Good luck

I would put something like a sheet down for him to play on, then fold the sheet and dump the legos back in a box.

You could maybe help him set up a little role play like a little town in a place where no one would fall over it so he could go back to it whenever he liked to add bits to it and play with it instead of tiding it away and having to set it all up again.

Hi There, We use Sterilite bins and drawers with wheels. They're semi-see through, lidded, tough, mobile and stackable. For loose pieces, I prefer the shallow bins, because locating pieces is easier, and the kids don't have to dig so deep. For "completed" items, I use the bigger, deeper bins. Clean up is easier because you just drop the item in. Seems to be working for now. The only eventual problem is finding a way to display the pieces. We have tons, and just dusting them is a true test of patience!

I, too, have this problem with my son ![[8o|]](/emoticons/emotion-39.gif) - we have enough Legos to open our own store! LOL It's CRAZY. I purchased through the LEGO site a few years ago, storage containers. I have two of them and they work. Most times, my son will put them in these containers, but if not, we have plastic Rubbermaid containers that work just as well. If you are adament about them being stored by color, I would suggest buying inexpensive plastic bowls with lids. Just a few thoughts. Good luck!!!

Use a container with no lip & a big base plate...scoop everything into a pile & scoop with the base plate.
To be OCD you can use plastic containers used for fishing tackle or beads. Workshop drawer sets work too
Sterilite rolling 3 drawer plastic units. 1 drw: baseplates, all sizes 2 drw: 1 dot wide bricks 3 drw: 2 dot wide bricks
Label with words or pictures. Make it a game to put the items back where they belong and/or match the picture.
I sort sets into it's own container & enclose the instruction book, then they can rebuild the set like it was just out of the box.
